How to get better at grouping puzzles

  • Read all sixteen words before you tap. The words that fit two groups are the trap.
  • Look for red herrings. If five words fit one category, one of them belongs to another group.
  • Start with the surest group. Each correct group removes four words and shrinks the board.
  • Think about wordplay for the last group. Words that follow the same word, hidden smaller words, or words that change meaning with a letter.
  • Shuffle. A new order often shows a pattern you missed.

Questions

What is a word grouping game?

A puzzle where you see a set of words, usually sixteen, and sort them into groups that share a connection. Each group has four words.

Is there an unlimited version?

Yes. LINKUP Unlimited serves a fresh puzzle each time you finish one, with a timed mode and an Expert set.

How do I find the tricky group?

Solve the easy groups first. The leftover words are often the wordplay group: words that follow the same word, or words with something hidden inside.

Is LINKUP the same as the New York Times game?

No. LINKUP is our own game and has no connection to The New York Times. The puzzles are written for this site.

Do I need an account?

No. Your streak and stats stay in your browser.
