FIVE, a free five-letter word guessing game
FIVE is a word guessing game for anyone who likes short puzzles. You get six tries to find a hidden five-letter word. After each guess the tiles turn teal, coral or gray to show how close you are. A round takes two to five minutes.
There is one new daily puzzle, the same for everyone, and a streak that counts the days you solve it. When you want more, play unlimited words with a new one every round, or try Blitz: as many words as you can solve in three minutes. Nothing to sign up for, and your stats stay in your browser.
How to play
- Type a five-letter word with your keyboard or tap the keys on screen, then press Enter. It has to be a real word from our list of about 8,600 five-letter words.
- Teal means the letter is in the word and in the right place. Coral means the letter is in the word but in a different place. Gray means the letter is not in the word.
- Use the colors to narrow it down. You have six guesses. The keyboard shows every letter you have tried.
- If you guess a letter twice and the answer has it once, only one tile is colored. Each letter in the answer is counted one time.
- Turn on Hard mode in Settings if you want to reuse every hint you find. Turn on Colorblind mode to swap teal and coral for orange and blue, with a marker on each tile.
- When you finish, tap Share result. It copies a grid of colored squares, with no letters, and a link to that day's puzzle.
Tips
- Start with a word that has different common letters, such as CRANE, SLATE or ADIEU, to find which vowels are in play.
- Use your second guess to test new letters if your first one found little. Do not repeat gray letters.
- Think about where letters can sit. Few English words end in J, and many end in E, S, Y or T.
- Watch for double letters when only one or two tiles light up. Words like SILLY, ALLOW and FLUFF repeat a letter.
- Try Unlimited to practice. There is no streak to lose there.

What is FIVE?
FIVE is a free five-letter word guessing game by Brainiac Play. It is a Wordle-style game with its own word list, an archive of past dailies, an unlimited mode and a timed Blitz mode.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes. One puzzle opens each day at midnight New York time and it is the same for every player. Past puzzles are in the archive. A daily answer is not used again for more than a year.
Can I play more than one word a day?
Yes. Unlimited mode gives you a new word every round, with Easy, Standard and Challenge levels. Blitz gives you three minutes to solve as many words as you can.
What is Hard mode?
In Hard mode every hint you reveal has to be used in your next guess. A teal letter must stay in its spot, and a coral letter must appear in the next word. You can only switch it on or off before your first guess in a round.
Is there a colorblind mode?
Yes. Colorblind mode changes the tile colors to orange and blue and adds a marker on each tile, so the meaning does not depend on color. The share grid changes to match.
Where do the words come from?
Guesses are checked against ENABLE, a public-domain word list, plus the common words from SCOWL. Answers are everyday words only, chosen from the common-word list, with no names, slurs or sensitive words.
Do I need an account?
No. Your streak, stats and settings are saved in this browser on this device. They do not sync to other devices.
