How to unscramble letters
Order does not matter. Put a ? in for each blank tile or letter you cannot read.
Words that use every letter are at the top. Those are usually the answer to a scramble puzzle.
Know the first letter or an ending? Fill in Starts with or Ends with, or tick common words only.
Practice unscrambling
Five to seven letter words, one at a time. No timer, no account. Use the hint if you get stuck.
Tips for unscrambling faster
- Look for endings first. If you see I, N, G or E, D or E, R, try ING, ED and ER on the end and unscramble what is left.
- Pull out letter pairs. TH, CH, SH, QU, PH and CK usually travel together. Lock one in and the rest gets smaller.
- Try common starts. RE, UN, DE, IN and EX start a lot of long words. Test them against your tiles.
- Separate vowels and consonants. Say the vowels out loud, then drop consonants between them until it sounds like a word.
- Move the tiles. Writing the letters in a circle or shuffling the rack breaks the fixed order your eye keeps seeing.

Questions
How does a word unscrambler work?
It checks every word in its dictionary and keeps the ones you can build from your letters, using each letter no more times than you typed it. Words that use all of your letters are listed first, then shorter words.
Can I use a blank tile or wildcard?
Yes. Type a question mark for each blank. A blank can stand in for any letter, so "A?E" finds ACE, AGE, APE, ARE, AXE and more. More blanks means more results, so the list gets long fast.
Which words are in the dictionary?
152,368 English words from 3 to 12 letters, built from the public-domain ENABLE list plus the SCOWL word list, with offensive words removed. Words marked in bold with a border are common everyday words; the rest are valid but rare.
Is this the same list Scrabble uses?
It is close, but not identical. Scrabble tournament dictionaries are licensed lists, and ours is built from open ones. Use the Scrabble word finder if you want tile scores, and check your own rulebook for challenges.
Why does it show fewer words than other sites?
We leave out slang, offensive words and names, and we only list words of 3 or more letters. A short, clean list is easier to scan when you are stuck on a puzzle.
