How to spot an anagram
- Sort the letters. Two words are anagrams exactly when their letters sorted A to Z match. That is what the solver does for each word in its list.
- Count first. Anagrams must have the same number of letters. If the lengths differ, you are looking at a different kind of word puzzle.
- Look for -S, -ED, -ER and -ING. A plural or past tense often ties a family together: STALE, STEAL and TALES differ only in where the S and E sit.
- Say the vowels. Most anagram families keep the same vowels and just move the consonants around them.

Questions
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word, using each letter once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams, and so are STALE, STEAL and LEAST.
Does the anagram solver find phrases?
No. It finds single-word anagrams. For a full phrase such as a name, solve for each word you suspect, or try the word finder to see which words fit in the letters.
What if my word has no anagram?
Many words have none. The solver then shows near misses: words that use all your letters plus one more, and words that use all but one of them, which are often the answer to a puzzle with a typo or a missing tile.
Can I use blank tiles?
Yes. Type a ? for each blank. A blank matches any one letter, so "TAE?" finds EAT plus a letter, such as EATS, ETAS, SEAT, TEAS and TEAK.
How is the dictionary built?
It holds 152,368 words of 3 to 12 letters from open word lists, with offensive words removed. Words with a border are everyday words.
