• 2 × 3 = 6
• 4 × 10 = 40
• 40 − 3 = 37
• 6 × 37 = 222

One thing to notice in this puzzle: the solver found many ways to hit 222 in 4 merges, so your route can differ from this one. Work backwards from the target: ask which two numbers make it, then which make those.
