Seven habits that make scrambled letters click, with a practice puzzle below.

Seven tips

  1. Count the letters. Knowing the length tells you which words are possible.
  2. Look for endings. ING, ED, ER, LY, TION and S are the most common. Set them aside and unscramble what is left.
  3. Pull out letter pairs. TH, CH, SH, QU, PH and CK nearly always travel together.
  4. Try common starts. RE, UN, DE, IN, EX and PRE start many long words.
  5. Separate vowels and consonants. Write them in two groups and weave them back together.
  6. Move the tiles. Shuffle them, or write them in a circle, so your eye stops seeing the old order.
  7. Use a tool when you are stuck. The word unscrambler shows every word your letters make. Then learn the pattern for next time.

Questions

What is the fastest way to unscramble a word?

Look for common endings (ING, ED, ER, LY), pull out letter pairs like TH, CH and QU, and try common starts such as RE, UN and DE. Then arrange what is left.

Why is it hard to see the word?

Your eye keeps the order the letters are in. Rearranging the tiles, writing them in a circle, or reading them aloud breaks that order.

Do vowels or consonants come first?

Split them. Say the vowels, then try consonants between them. Most English words alternate sounds.

Is there a tool to help?

Yes. The word unscrambler lists every word your letters can make, longest first.
